Recent observations off Cape Cod Bay have sparked hope for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale population, which numbers around 370. Scientists from the Center for Coastal Studies reported spotting the first two right whales of the feeding season on November 18, indicating a potentially strong season for feeding and breeding.
These whales, typically arriving in the bay in early winter, have been seen feeding on tiny organisms near the water's surface earlier than expected. Water samples revealed the presence of Calanus finmarchicus, a crucial, oil-rich crustacean for whale health, in higher numbers than usual for this time of year.
Moreover, a recent study indicated a 4% increase in the whale population from 2020 to 2023, a promising sign after a significant decline of 25% from 2010 to 2020. However, conservationists emphasize the urgent need for protection, as fewer than 70 reproductively active females remain. The species faces threats from fishing gear entanglement and ship collisions, exacerbated by ocean warming.
