Innovative Reforestation Project Launched in Ucayali to Restore Amazonian Ecosystems

In a significant step towards environmental recovery, the native community of Puerto Firmeza in Yarinacocha, Ucayali, has initiated a large-scale reforestation project following devastating forest fires. The project aims to plant 1.5 million reforestation spheres containing native seeds across more than 3,000 hectares affected by the fires.

Environment Minister Juan Carlos Castro emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This first mass planting of 1.5 million reforestation spheres marks a key step in restoring our Amazonian ecosystems impacted by recent forest fires."

The 2 cm diameter spheres are made from seeds of local species such as capirona, bolaina, shaina, and sangre de grado, mixed with clay and compost, and coated with cassava starch to enhance germination. This innovative method, developed by the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP), has been tailored to the local conditions of the Peruvian Amazon.

Experts from IIAP demonstrated the sphere production process at their Experimental Station in Pucallpa, showcasing a combination of drone and manual dispersion techniques. This technology has previously shown positive results in regions of Africa and the Middle East.

The goal for the end of this year is to distribute and plant 25 million reforestation spheres in Ucayali and San Martín, with plans to extend the effort to other fire-affected areas across the country. This ambitious project is supported by IIAP, the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp), local governments, and the communities themselves.

Minister Castro highlighted the project's role in raising awareness about forest fire prevention, stating, "This initiative marks a milestone in the restoration of our Amazonian ecosystems, demonstrating how innovation and collaboration with communities can positively impact our biodiversity and the quality of life of our fellow citizens."

Designed with 100% Peruvian technology, the reforestation spheres facilitate transportation and dispersion over large areas, aiming to accelerate the recovery of forests damaged by recent fires and promote the regeneration of native flora in a shorter timeframe.
