On January 20, 2025, Gwadar International Airport officially commenced operations, marking a significant milestone for Balochistan and Pakistan's connectivity to the world. The airport, sprawling over 430 acres, is strategically located just 26 kilometers from the city of Gwadar, at the Gundani site.
With a single runway measuring 3,658 meters in length and 75 meters in width, the airport is equipped to accommodate large aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. This impressive infrastructure was built at a cost of approximately Rs50 billion, showcasing a commitment to enhancing regional travel and trade.
The inaugural flight, PK 503, took off from Karachi at 9:50 am and landed in Gwadar at 11:15 am, carrying 46 passengers. This momentous occasion was celebrated with a water-canon salute, symbolizing the beginning of a new era in air travel for the region.
Gwadar Airport's designation as an international airport allows passengers to travel abroad directly from Gwadar, which is expected to boost tourism and facilitate the delivery of goods. The Federal Board of Revenue has formally recognized the airport's international status, paving the way for future international flights.
During the airport's inauguration, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized the importance of this project as a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The airport is envisioned as a regional connectivity hub, enhancing trade and economic development in Pakistan.
