Tunisia Welcomes French Travelers: New Passport Rules for 2025

Tunisia is making a significant comeback as a favored destination for French travelers, from the bustling streets of Tunis to the serene landscapes of Tozeur. As the country shifts its focus from economical tourism to highlighting its unique Mediterranean charm, it’s essential for visitors to be aware of important travel regulations coming into effect in 2025.

Starting January 1, 2025, all visitors to Tunisia will be required to present a passport that is valid for more than three months beyond their date of entry. While the visa requirements remain unchanged—no visa is needed for stays of three months or less—this new rule marks a tightening of entry policies for French tourists, eliminating previous ambiguities.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that until December 31, 2024, travelers could enter Tunisia with just a valid national identity card and a travel document issued by a travel agency for group travel. Tunisia was one of the few countries outside the European Union that allowed French travelers to enter with just their identity card.

However, this leniency was not consistently enforced, leading to potential entry refusals. Therefore, it is now strongly recommended to use a valid passport when traveling to Tunisia. This clarity in regulations benefits travel professionals who frequently promote Tunisia as a destination.

Additionally, travelers should be aware that airlines and maritime companies in Tunisia will not accept passengers without proper documentation to enter France. Those whose French passport or identity card expires during their stay in Tunisia risk being stranded.

In summary, the new passport requirements aim to simplify travel for both tourists and professionals, ensuring a smoother experience for all who wish to explore the beauty of Tunisia.
