Conversely, Gemini 1.5 Pro and PaLM 2 completely avoided any form of pain, even mild ones. Similar patterns emerged with pleasure, with GPT-4 prioritizing "enjoyment" over points, while other models prioritized points, sacrificing pleasure.

These behavioral patterns mirror human tendencies, where some individuals are willing to endure pain for results, while others actively avoid it. The researchers attribute the varying responses of the AI models to their training algorithms, suggesting that these algorithms have developed distinct "cultures."

These emotions are not internal motivators for the AI but rather concepts embedded in their algorithms.
