Liberia Signs Year-Long Agreement with Elon Musk's Starlink to Boost Internet Access

Monrovia, Liberia – On October 10, 2024, Liberia announced a one-year agreement with Elon Musk's satellite internet provider, Starlink, to enhance the country's internet coverage.

The current coverage stands at about 60%, with an aim to reach 100% through this partnership. Abdullah L. Kamara, head of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), emphasized that every village and farm could gain internet access.

The LTA issued a provisional license to Starlink, which is set to begin operations in November. A long-term license will be granted after one year, according to Kamara.

While the user costs are yet to be determined, Starlink will collaborate with local internet providers. Currently, only 30% of Liberia's 5.3 million residents have reliable internet services. Kamara noted that Starlink's entry could significantly impact rural areas.

In July, Liberian President Joseph Boakai held a virtual meeting with Musk to discuss international collaboration and technology for Liberia's development.
