Serbia's longest tunnel, a key project under the Belt and Road Initiative, is nearing completion. President Aleksandar Vucic announced the progress during a visit to the Iriski Venac construction site. The tunnel is being constructed by Chinese firms.
The twin-tube tunnel, part of the Fruska Gora Corridor, will span approximately 3.5 km in each direction. Roughly 6,000 meters have been excavated, and the tunnel is expected to open to traffic in just over a year. The project aims to significantly shorten travel time and enhance connectivity.
Vucic emphasized the corridor's benefits, including improved safety, boosted investment, and environmental preservation. By diverting surface traffic, the tunnel will help protect the biodiversity of Fruska Gora National Park. Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Li Ming hailed the project as a symbol of Serbia-China cooperation.
Li stated that the tunnel strengthens regional connectivity, supports economic growth, and enhances ties between Serbia and its neighbors. Currently, 245 workers and over 50 pieces of heavy machinery are operating on the site. The tunnel is part of the EUR 606 million Fruska Gora Corridor, built by China Road and Bridge Corporation, with construction beginning in May 2021.
The completion of the tunnel is expected to have a significant impact on regional connectivity and economic growth. It represents a key achievement in Serbia-China relations and the Belt and Road Initiative. The project is poised to improve travel efficiency and environmental sustainability in the region.
