Myanmar Junta and Opposition Likely to Extend Ceasefire After Earthquake, Facilitating Aid Delivery

Myanmar's military junta and the National Unity Government (NUG) are likely to extend their ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid efforts following the devastating earthquake that struck the region on March 28, 2025. The announcement comes after Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who also chairs ASEAN, urged both sides to prolong the truce during discussions in Bangkok.

The initial ceasefire was declared following the earthquake, which caused widespread destruction and claimed over 3,700 lives. Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of maintaining open communication and prioritizing humanitarian relief to ensure the successful delivery of aid to those in need. He also held a virtual meeting with U Mahn Win Khaing Than of the NUG, discussing urgent humanitarian needs and the possibility of a face-to-face meeting in Malaysia.

Despite the ceasefire pledges, sporadic fighting has persisted in some areas. The success of the extended ceasefire is crucial for ensuring the safety of humanitarian personnel and enabling the delivery of aid to affected communities. Malaysia has already sent a 69-member medical team and equipment, including a field hospital, to assist in the relief efforts. ASEAN has been actively involved in coordinating humanitarian assistance, with Thailand focusing on the Mandalay region and Malaysia on the Sagaing area.
