EU and China to Address Trade Imbalances at Upcoming Summit Amidst US Tensions

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has urged China to address trade imbalances through negotiations, amidst rising trade tensions with the United States. This call was made during a phone conversation with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, according to reports from global news agencies.

Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of a level playing field in trade relations between Europe and China, advocating for "one strong reformed trading system, free, fair, and based on equal treatment," as stated in the announcement. The EU is concerned that China may redirect exports intended for the U.S. towards Europe, potentially exacerbating existing trade imbalances.

The EU seeks assurances from China that it will not flood the European market with goods diverted from the U.S. due to tariffs. This issue is particularly sensitive in sectors already struggling with global overcapacity.

These discussions come as the U.S. has been increasing tariffs on Chinese goods. The Chinese Ministry of Finance has stated it will impose retaliatory tariffs on some imports from the U.S. should the tariffs be implemented.

Von der Leyen highlighted China's crucial role in addressing these trade imbalances, especially in sectors vulnerable to global production surpluses. The upcoming EU-China summit will be critical for addressing these concerns and shaping future trade relations.
