EU to Discuss Plastics Industry Future Action Plan at Upcoming Summit

The European Commission is being urged to convene a summit to address the future of the European plastics sector. Plastics Europe, led by Director General Virginia Janssens, emphasizes the need for a dedicated Action Plan involving EU institutions, member states, and key stakeholders. This initiative aims to tackle the competitive challenges facing the industry and foster a more favorable investment climate. The call comes amid concerns that the European plastics industry's competitiveness is at risk, potentially leading to increased reliance on imports from regions with less stringent environmental standards. Janssens stresses that the investment decisions made in the next two years will be critical in determining whether the EU can meet the ambitions set out in the European Green Deal and the Plastics Transition roadmap. The proposed summit would focus on ensuring that plastics are considered in all sector-specific initiatives, innovation funding, and measures to secure the supply of key materials within the EU. The goal is to establish a circular and net-zero plastics system, requiring collaboration between policymakers, producers, and the entire value chain.
