Brazil will host the COP30 climate conference in Belém from November 10-21, 2025. To manage the influx of attendees, the Brazilian government has decided to hold a summit for heads of state and government in advance of the main conference. The leaders' meeting will occur a few days before the official start date, though the exact date is yet to be determined.
The COP30 is expected to draw significant global attention, with initial projections estimating up to 50,000 participants. By holding the leaders' summit beforehand, organizers aim to reduce this number to around 30,000. Brazil is investing heavily in infrastructure to prepare Belém for the event, including constructing new hotels and renovating schools for temporary lodging. Investments in infrastructure projects range from R$ 4 billion to R$ 5 billion, focusing on drainage and canal improvements.
The government plans to hold a meeting with all embassies in March to present progress updates on preparations and address logistical and security concerns. Valter Correia, the extraordinary secretary of COP30, emphasized the importance of aligning infrastructure with the conference's goal of achieving effective climate agreements.
