President Donald Trump announced a new fighter jet mission for Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan. This announcement aims to secure the base's future. The event took place shortly after Trump arrived in Michigan for a rally.

Trump and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer shared a hug at the event. Whitmer has been working with the Trump administration to secure the mission. She sees the base as a key defense hub and economic anchor.

Selfridge Air National Guard Base is located 30 miles north of Detroit. The base generates an estimated $850 million in statewide economic impact. It also supports about 5,000 military and civilian personnel.

Whitmer has pressed multiple administrations for a new mission for the base. The Air Force previously denied Selfridge's bid for F-35A Lightning jets in 2017. Trump's announcement is considered a victory for Whitmer.

The governor has been mentioned as a potential presidential candidate. She has vowed to find common ground with Trump where possible. Some Democrats prefer opposing Trump and his team whenever possible.

Earlier this month, Whitmer met with Trump in Washington to discuss Selfridge. They also discussed tariffs on Canada and other U.S. trading partners. Trump assured Whitmer he wanted to keep the base open and strong.

Michigan's unemployment rate has risen for three consecutive months. The rate reached 5.5% in March, exceeding the national average. Trump's visit and announcement come at a time of economic concern for the state.
