Trump's Executive Order: Boston Prepares for Potential Sanctuary City List Designation

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Boston is bracing for a potential confrontation with the federal government. This follows President Donald Trump's executive order to publish a list of "sanctuary cities." The city has previously been targeted for its sanctuary laws. Mayor Michelle Wu testified before Congress in March regarding these laws. Supporters argue they enhance safety for all residents. While Boston's inclusion on the list is uncertain, officials are preparing for potential repercussions. Wu emphasized that community safety relies on residents feeling secure enough to report crimes. Boston police are prohibited from cooperating on civil immigration cases. However, they continue to work with federal authorities on criminal matters. A 2017 court decision restricts Massachusetts law enforcement from detaining individuals based solely on civil immigration detainers. The executive order mandates the publication of the sanctuary cities list within 30 days. Federal agencies must then identify grants and contracts provided to these cities, potentially leading to cancellations. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated the importance of obeying and respecting the law. She stressed not obstructing federal immigration officials. The federal government has previously targeted Boston, with officials vowing strong action. Wu has consistently defended Boston's policies, highlighting its status as the "safest major city." City officials are conducting "scenario planning" in case of federal funding cuts. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office has a federal grant for prosecuting domestic violence cases. The DA's Office does not assist or hinder ICE operations. They do not anticipate policy changes regardless of the list's contents. The spokesperson wrote in an email: "No administration can claim to enhance public safety while pursuing measures that can potentially harm public safety."
