The U.S. military has initiated a troop withdrawal from Syria. The Pentagon has reportedly closed 3 of its 8 small operational bases in northeastern Syria.

The number of troops has been reduced from approximately 2,000 to about 1,400. This information comes from a report in the American press citing senior U.S. officials.

Pentagon officials will assess the situation in 60 days to determine if further cuts are necessary. A Pentagon official suggested maintaining at least 500 troops in Syria.
