The US will impose a 21% tariff on most tomato imports from Mexico starting July 14, 2025. The Department of Commerce announced the termination of the 2019 trade agreement, citing its failure to protect US tomato growers from unfairly priced Mexican imports. In 2023, the US imported $2.7 billion worth of tomatoes from Mexico. The 2019 agreement, which averted tariffs, established minimum pricing standards and inspection mechanisms. The upcoming tariff excludes tomatoes for processing and follows previous tariffs imposed on Mexico.
