Mark Carney, 59, former head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is favored to succeed Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party. Trudeau announced his resignation in January after nearly a decade in power. The new leader will become prime minister and is expected to face challenges from Donald Trump. Trump has previously imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and expressed a desire for Canada to become the "51st American state." These actions have led to boycotts of American products by some Canadians. An Angus Reid Institute poll indicated 43% of Canadians prefer Carney to confront Trump, compared to 34% for Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. Carney's international experience and calm demeanor are seen as reassuring. Elections are expected by October, but could occur sooner.
