Armenia Faces Political Turmoil Amidst Potential Coup

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

In 2025, Armenia is facing significant political instability due to alleged coup attempts. The head of the General Staff, with the support of the "Sacred Movement", is reportedly planning a coup.

On June 25, 2025, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that security forces had thwarted a plan by religious figures aimed at overthrowing the government. The Armenian investigative committee is investigating the case.

On June 26, 2025, the Armenian court sentenced the accused to several months in prison on charges of inciting a coup. Pashinyan described the events as a "vicious plot by criminal religious figures" aimed at seizing power.

This follows the events of 2020, when the Armenian church's leader, Karekin II, called for Pashinyan's resignation after the military defeat in Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflicts escalated after Baku's control over the region in 2023, when Pashinyan sought peace with Azerbaijan, which led to the arrest of many Armenian religious figures.

On June 30, 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron announced his support for Armenia in the face of coup attempts. Macron urged Pashinyan to achieve peace with Azerbaijan and normalize relations with Turkey, emphasizing that peace and open borders were crucial for the region.

Armenia continues to face internal and external challenges as the government seeks to achieve political and economic stability, while also dealing with pressure from religious institutions that seek to influence the country's political landscape.
