The European Union is preparing to impose new sanctions on Iranian officials accused of detaining foreign nationals for political leverage, a practice known as hostage diplomacy. The sanctions, which include asset freezes and visa bans, target individuals allegedly involved in espionage and security-related offenses. France, which has two nationals in Iranian custody, has been a strong advocate for increased pressure on Tehran. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has stated the EU will adopt additional sanctions against Iranian officials responsible for this policy of state hostage-taking. Diplomats have indicated that at least nine Iranian officials will be targeted. This move comes amid growing concerns over Iran's detention of dual nationals, with at least 20 European citizens believed to be held in Iranian prisons. France is also preparing to file a complaint against Iran at the International Court of Justice, citing violations of consular protection rights. The EU's actions reflect a broader hardening of its stance on Iran, including criticism of its nuclear program and military cooperation with Russia.
