Berlin Climate Dialogue Seeks Solutions After US Exit

Diplomats and ministers from 40 countries convened in Berlin for the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, seeking new approaches to international climate policy following the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. Participants, representing approximately 190 nations, explored ways to overcome divisions and maintain action without U.S. involvement. Johan Rockström of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) highlighted the accelerating rate of global warming, noting that last year's temperature increase exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Olaf Scholz criticized the U.S. for ignoring climate change facts and its responsibility as a major greenhouse gas emitter. A study by the OECD and UNDP suggests climate protection boosts economic growth. Participants face challenges, including setting new greenhouse gas reduction targets by September and debating EU targets for 2040.
