Ukrainian and Russian negotiators have reportedly agreed to de-escalate conflict in the Black Sea during ceasefire talks, according to U.S. officials. Both nations have pledged to ensure safe navigation, prevent violence, and prohibit the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea. The U.S. government subsequently announced its support for lifting trade restrictions on Russian agricultural products. These discussions occurred during separate talks in Saudi Arabia between U.S. representatives and delegations from Ukraine and Russia. Moscow has been advocating for the revival of a 2022 agreement that would secure Ukrainian agricultural exports via the Black Sea in exchange for eased sanctions. The original agreement, brokered by Turkey and the UN, expired after Russia declined to renew it in 2023, citing unmet promises regarding sanctions relief for Russian agricultural exports. Former US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to quickly end the conflict in Ukraine and voiced optimism about the talks in Saudi Arabia.
