US and Russia Vie for India's Attention with Advanced Fighter Jets

Edited by: Katya Palm Beach

The United States and Russia are engaged in a geopolitical competition to secure India's strategic commitment, particularly in the realm of military aviation. At the heart of this rivalry are two fifth-generation fighter jets: the U.S.'s F-35 Lightning II and Russia's Su-57 Felon. Washington is actively promoting the sale of the F-35 to India, offering it as part of a broader military cooperation package. Moscow, on the other hand, is attempting to entice New Delhi with a proposal that includes the local manufacturing of the Su-57 in India and technology transfer, aiming to counter U.S. influence in the region. India, strategically located between East and West, has become a focal point in the pursuit of advanced fighter jets. This is driven by the country's increasing interest in modernizing its defense capabilities amid tensions in the Indo-Pacific, the perceived threat from China, and the need to diversify its sources of military technology. The F-35 Lightning II, developed by Lockheed Martin, is known for its stealth capabilities, sophisticated sensor systems, and integration into high-tech information networks. It has been adopted by numerous U.S. allies across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The Su-57 Felon, developed by Sukhoi, represents Russia's effort to regain prominence in military aviation. It is designed as a stealth fighter combining maneuverability, speed, and multirole combat capabilities. While its serial production is limited, it has demonstrated its capabilities in air shows. Aero India 2025 showcased this rivalry, with both the F-35 and Su-57 present. The U.S. offered a package including the F-35, logistical support, training, and access to an integrated defense network. Russia proposed direct sales of the Su-57 with local production in India, involving technology transfer to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). India's decision involves balancing historical ties with Russia and growing U.S. influence, while prioritizing its strategic interests. The recent sale of the Su-57 to Algeria marks Russia's first international sale of the aircraft, demonstrating its competitiveness. The choice between the F-35 and Su-57 will impact India's foreign policy and defense strategy, influencing its relationships with the U.S. and Russia.
