Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, 2025, emphasizing the need for Europe to assert itself as a significant global actor.
Zelensky expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's foreign policy on NATO and European alliances. He stated, "Europe cannot afford to be in second or third place regarding alliances. If that happens, the world will begin to move on without Europe." He noted that Europe is currently not a priority for Washington, a situation that may worsen under Trump.
While acknowledging his good relations with Trump, whom he described as "an indispensable ally," Zelensky questioned whether the President would prioritize Europe in his second term. He raised concerns about Trump's past criticisms of NATO and his apparent disregard for the European Union.
Zelensky urged Europe to prepare for discussions regarding peace in Ukraine, highlighting the uncertainty of whether Trump would engage with European leaders or negotiate solely with Russia and China. He stressed the importance of Europe understanding its role in the changing dynamics with the U.S. and the looming threat from Russia.
The President pointed out that there is no ocean separating Europe from Russia, unlike the U.S. He warned that North Korean soldiers are now closer to Davos than to Pyongyang due to the alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang.
He reiterated that Europe must not forget the implications of Vladimir Putin's actions and must increase its defense capabilities to deter any attempts by Russia to reclaim former Soviet territories. Zelensky advocated for a unified European defense and foreign policy, stating that Europe needs the EU, NATO, and a commitment to peace.
He concluded by calling for the establishment of a European security and defense policy, emphasizing that Europe must be able to defend itself independently, citing Ukraine's advancements in drone technology as an example of self-reliance in the ongoing conflict.
