EU Set to Sanction Iran Over Missile Transfers to Russia

BRUSSELS - On October 14, 2024, the European Union (EU) is expected to impose sanctions on 14 individuals and organizations linked to the transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia, as confirmed by EU diplomats and officials.

The sanctions will target various entities, including airlines and companies involved in these transfers. Although specific names have not been disclosed, reports suggest that Iran Air may be among those affected. This decision follows allegations from the United States that Russia has received ballistic missiles from Iran for its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In response to these claims, the EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, proposed a substantial set of targeted measures against Iran, aiming to curb its military support for Russia. This package of sanctions will mark the first implementation of those proposals.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has denied any transfers of weapons to Russia since taking office in August. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reportedly informed Borrell that Iran had supplied short-range rockets to Russia, which are claimed not to be ballistic and can travel up to 250 kilometers.

Additionally, EU discussions are ongoing regarding the potential designation of Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, following a German court ruling that provided a legal basis for such a move.

This meeting and subsequent sanctions reflect the EU's commitment to addressing security concerns related to military cooperation between Iran and Russia, with significant implications for international relations in the region.
