UN Security Council Addresses Middle East Two-State Solution; France & Saudi Arabia to Co-host June 2025 Conference

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

The UN Security Council convened in April 2025 to discuss the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and explore avenues for a sustainable two-state solution. Secretary-General Guterres urged member states to proactively engage and take concrete steps towards achieving this goal. The discussions also focused on the importance of international recognition for Palestine, normalization of relations with Israel, and ensuring Israel's security within the region.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot highlighted France and Saudi Arabia's joint effort to host a conference at the UN in June 2025, aiming to make progress on these critical issues. Barrot emphasized that a roadmap for the two-state solution requires disarming Hamas, establishing a credible government in Gaza excluding Hamas, and reforming the Palestinian Authority.

Slovenia's State Secretary Barbara Žvokelj advocated for the two-state solution, stressing that the Gaza war does not enhance Israel's security. She criticized attacks on humanitarian workers and facilities in Gaza, reiterating Slovenia's long-standing support for the two-state solution and its recognition of Palestine in the previous year. The UN-backed conference in June 2025 aims to provide a platform to advance international efforts for a lasting solution.
