UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his approval of the recent announcements by Azerbaijan and Armenia, indicating the conclusion of negotiations on a draft peace agreement. Guterres, through his spokesman Stephane Dujarric, conveyed his encouragement regarding the progress made by both parties toward normalizing relations. He voiced strong support for their endeavors aimed at resolving all pending issues to achieve lasting peace in the region.
Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been strained since 1991, particularly due to the occupation of Karabakh and adjacent regions by Armenian forces. Azerbaijan regained control over most of the territory in 2020, leading to talks on normalization and demarcation.
