Survey Reveals Airline Passengers' Reluctance to Pay for Green Initiatives Amid Climate Concerns

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On December 29, 2024, a survey conducted among South African airline passengers revealed significant insights into consumer attitudes towards sustainable aviation practices. While a majority of respondents acknowledged the aviation industry's contribution to climate change, estimated at approximately 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually, many expressed hesitance to incur additional costs associated with eco-friendly initiatives.

The survey highlighted a notable gap between the desire for greener practices and the willingness to pay 'green premiums' on airline tickets. This resistance may pose challenges for airlines striving to implement sustainable operations while remaining competitive in a price-sensitive market.

Despite concerns over costs, travellers recognized the importance of sustainable flying and indicated that airlines should focus on integrating green services and educational programs. Such initiatives could encourage more environmentally conscious decisions among passengers, aligning with global sustainability goals.
