Ineos' Project Greensand: Construction of EU's First CO2 Transit Terminal Begins at Port Esbjerg in 2025

Construction of the carbon dioxide (CO2) transit terminal for Project Greensand began in May 2025 at Port Esbjerg, Denmark. This terminal is expected to be the EU's first logistics hub dedicated to CO2 capture and permanent storage. INEOS Energy will operate the terminal for the Greensand consortium.

The terminal will feature six large holding tanks, each capable of storing approximately 1,000 tons of liquefied CO2. The CO2 will be transported by truck to Port Esbjerg, stored temporarily, and then shipped to the INEOS-operated Nini platform in the Danish North Sea. From the Nini platform, the CO2 will be injected into subsurface reservoirs approximately 1,800 meters beneath the seabed for permanent storage.

The construction is expected to be completed by Autumn 2025, with offshore CO2 injection beginning in late 2025 or early 2026. This project supports the European Commission's goal of storing 250 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2040 to meet the Paris Agreement commitments.
