On May 8, 2025, Ukraine received €1 billion from the European Union (EU) under the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) program. These funds are secured by profits generated from frozen Russian assets.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that the funds would cover critical budget expenditures and strengthen the state. He emphasized that this transfer is part of a fair approach where the aggressor must pay for the destruction caused. The EU's financial support is part of a broader effort to help Ukraine sustain its military and reconstruction efforts, including repairing critical infrastructure.
The disbursement is part of the G7-led ERA initiative, which aims to provide approximately €45 billion in financial support to Ukraine. The EU has disbursed €6 billion to Ukraine since the beginning of 2025 under this program. The loans are to be repaid with proceeds from frozen Russian assets in the EU.
