Singapore and the European Union (EU) signed the European Union-Singapore Digital Trade Agreement (EUSDTA) on May 7, 2025, marking a significant step in bolstering digital trade and connectivity. The agreement was signed by Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu and EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic.
The EUSDTA establishes rules for digital trade and cross-border data flows, enhancing EU-Singapore relations and bilateral economic connectivity. It aims to enable open and secure data flows, supporting trusted cross-border data transfers for e-commerce. Both Singapore and the EU have agreed to maintain a legal framework that protects personal data.
This agreement supports cross-border e-payments and e-invoicing, adopting international standards to promote interoperability. Singapore and the EU will also collaborate on cybersecurity to mitigate threats and enhance consumer protection. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are expected to benefit from improved access to government data and support for digital tools.
