eu Considers Ban on New Russian Fossil Fuel Contracts

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Brussels, April 22 – The European Commission is assessing the possibility of legislating to forbid EU firms from signing new contracts for Russian fossil fuels.

The commission is also exploring legal options to allow EU companies to break existing gas supply contracts with Russia without penalties. A “roadmap” outlining these options is due on May 6.

The EU still received 19% of its total gas and LNG supply from Russia in 2024. The commission will hold deliberations with EU member states and companies after publishing its roadmap next month.
