United Nations human rights experts condemned the recent public executions of four men in Afghanistan. The executions took place in different areas of the country. Experts called for an immediate end to all "inhuman punishments" by the Taliban regime. Eleven experts stated that these executions normalize brutality and create fear. They emphasized that the executions violate international law. The experts also noted they constitute an attack on human dignity. Since the Taliban regained control in August 2021, at least ten people have been publicly executed in Afghanistan. The experts urged Afghan authorities to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty. They also expressed concern over the increasing use of corporal punishments, such as flogging.
