EU Commits to Strengthening Biological Weapons Convention on its 50th Anniversary

The EU reaffirmed its commitment to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) on its 50th anniversary, March 26, 2025. The EU aims to prevent the development, production, or use of biological weapons. Signed in 1975, the BWC, with 188 member states, was the first multilateral treaty banning an entire category of weapons of mass destruction. The EU has contributed over €15 million since 2006 to support the BWC, including funding for the Implementation Support Unit and national implementation efforts. The EU urges signatory organizations to enhance the convention's effectiveness against evolving global threats.
