Montenegro Launches Project to Remediate Contaminated Site of Former Brskovo Mine Under Minamata Convention

Montenegro has initiated a three-year project to develop remediation options for the contaminated site of the former Brskovo mine. Launched under the Minamata Convention on Mercury's Specific International Programme, the project aims to establish sustainable solutions for managing polluted areas and protecting the environment. The initiative is led by the Environmental Protection Agency in partnership with the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North (MERS), the Institute for Public Health (IJZ), and NGO Ozon. The project includes assessing pollution, creating a remediation plan, conducting biomonitoring to assess local population's exposure to mercury, and developing a legal framework for soil protection aligned with EU standards. The project seeks to reduce the impact of mining activities on public health and the environment.
