Kenya Proposes Haiti's Integration into the African Union to Bolster UN Peacekeeping Efforts

Kenya has proposed integrating Haiti into the African Union (AU) to facilitate the transition of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti to a United Nations Peacekeeping Operation. The proposal follows a request made by former Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe in 2012. Kenya deployed its first contingent of security forces to Haiti on June 25, 2024, as part of the MSS, with over 600 personnel, including a special female SWAT unit, currently in place. The African Union, established in May 2001 and headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, comprises 55 member states focused on addressing political, social, and economic issues, including conflict prevention, development, and pan-African integration.
