Turkey is the center of intense diplomatic efforts as Ukraine and Russia engage in their first direct talks in Istanbul in over three years. This follows a meeting between Turkish President Erdogan and Ukrainian President Zelensky in Ankara. Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine is sending a high-level delegation, led by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, expressing hope for progress towards a fair peace. However, he criticized the composition of the Russian delegation, suggesting it lacks decision-making power. The Russian delegation is headed by Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to President Putin. Despite the commencement of talks, expectations remain low. United States President Donald Trump has tempered hopes, stating that significant progress is unlikely until he meets with Putin. The talks are scheduled to take place at Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul.
