Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leading to the evacuation of over 1,400 people. The most affected area is Campana, located 75 kilometers from the capital. The flooding began on Friday, May 16, 2025, and the government has mobilized the Armed Forces to assist with evacuations.
According to the Federal Emergency Agency, affected areas have received 280 millimeters of rain in 24 hours. Twenty-six municipalities in the province of Buenos Aires have reported damages related to the storm. Television images show residents of Zárate, 100 km from the capital, navigating flooded streets in boats.
The heavy rains are expected to cause further delays in the ongoing soybean harvest. Argentina is a major exporter of soy products, corn, and wheat. The capital city has also been affected, with 170 millimeters of rain recorded, nearly double the monthly average for May.
