Protests against mass tourism erupt in Spain's canary islands

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Thousands protested in Spain's Canary Islands on Sunday, May 19th, against mass tourism. Demonstrators urged authorities to limit visitor numbers to protect residents. Concerns include soaring housing costs, traffic congestion, and overburdened services. The protests occurred across the main islands and in mainland Spain. The slogan was "Canaries have a limit". Protesters highlighted the strain on water supplies and infrastructure. More than one million foreign tourists visit the islands monthly, exceeding the local population of 2.2 million. The number of hotel beds has tripled since the 1970s, exacerbating the issues. Similar protests have occurred in other Spanish tourist destinations.
