Portugal's 2025 Election: Democratic Alliance Wins Amidst Political Instability

Edited by: Света Света

Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's Democratic Alliance (AD) won the snap elections on May 18, 2025. However, the party did not secure enough votes for a majority, raising concerns about political stability in the EU and NATO member country.

With nearly complete official results, AD secured 32.7% of the vote, translating to 89 seats out of 230, falling short of the 116 needed for a majority. The Socialist Party garnered 23.4%, while the far-right Chega party obtained 22.6%, tying with the Socialist Party at 58 seats each.

Montenegro has rejected any alliance with Chega, deeming them unreliable. Chega's leader, Andre Ventura, declared the end of bipartisanship in Portugal, as his party tied with the Socialist Party. The election, Portugal's third in as many years, highlights the country's ongoing political volatility and the rise of right-wing influence.
