China's LandSpace Technology successfully launched its Zhuque-2E Y2 methane-powered rocket on Saturday, May 17, 2025, carrying six satellites into orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. This mission highlights China's growing capabilities in commercial space technology and its commitment to using cleaner fuel alternatives.

The Zhuque-2E Y2 lifted off at 12:12 p.m. local time (0412 GMT), marking the fifth flight in the Zhuque-2 series. The Beijing-based company, LandSpace, achieved a historic milestone in July 2023 by becoming the first globally to successfully launch a methane-liquid oxygen rocket, ahead of U.S. competitors like SpaceX and Blue Origin. Methane is gaining traction as a safer, cheaper, and less polluting fuel option for reusable rockets.

LandSpace is also developing reusable rockets, with test launches expected in the second half of 2025. The latest Zhuque-2 series incorporates technical improvements to support the development of reusable rockets. This launch also marked the first deployment of a propulsion method involving chilling both liquid oxygen and methane below their boiling points to boost thrust.
