Germany's new government, under Chancellor Friedrich Merz, is streamlining its foreign policy approach, which includes abolishing the special envoy post for the Western Balkans. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce bureaucracy and ensure a more direct continuation of Germany's existing policies in the region. The responsibilities previously held by the special envoy will be transferred to relevant departments within the Chancellery, signaling a shift towards centralizing foreign policy decision-making.
Despite the elimination of the special envoy position, Germany remains committed to the Western Balkans and its integration with the European Union. The government emphasizes that cooperation with the countries in the region will continue, with a focus on aligning aspiring EU members with the Union's policies. While EU enlargement in the Western Balkans may not be a top priority, Germany is expected to maintain its presence and influence through economic engagement and support for the EU accession process.
Meanwhile, the UK is set to host the Berlin Process Summit in Autumn 2025, underscoring the ongoing international commitment to the Western Balkans. This summit will focus on strengthening cooperation with European partners to address irregular migration, enhance security, and promote economic cooperation in the region. Dame Karen Pierce DCMG has been appointed as the UK Special Envoy to the Western Balkans, charged with driving forward the UK's strategic objectives and preparing for the summit.
