A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Chile and Argentina on Friday, May 2, 2025, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located approximately 219 kilometers (136 miles) off the coast in the Drake Passage.

Following the earthquake, the US National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning. Chilean authorities ordered the evacuation of coastal areas in the Magallanes region, anticipating waves of one to three meters.

While Argentina's Ushuaia reported no damage, an evacuation order was issued for Puerto Almanza. The evacuation order for the Magallanes region in Chile was later lifted, allowing residents to return, though people were still advised to stay away from beaches and coastal regions.
