Somalia bans Taiwanese passport holders amid China pressure

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Somalia has banned the transit and entry of all Taiwanese passport holders. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs accuses China of pressuring Somalia into introducing these measures. The ban took effect on Wednesday, according to the ministry.

Somalia cited United Nations Resolution 2758 and the "one China" principle. Taiwan's ministry strongly protested Somalia's action, demanding the Somali government immediately revoke the notice. They accuse Mogadishu of misinterpreting the UN resolution.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports Somalia's decision. They view it as a legitimate step to protect Somalia's interests. China opposes any official exchange between Taiwan and Somaliland.
