South Korea's Constitutional Court Upholds Impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol

The Constitutional Court of South Korea unanimously upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday, April 4. Yoon was initially impeached by Parliament at the end of last year following his attempt to impose martial law. New elections must be held within 60 days. Yoon, 64, had been suspended from his duties since December 14 after decreeing martial law, alleging that the opposition acted against the state and was infiltrated by communists. The Constitutional Court stated that the martial law was unjustified and that Yoon violated the law by appealing to the military to prevent the measure from being suspended by legislators. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will continue to serve as president until a new leader is inaugurated. He pledged to hold the next elections as stipulated by the Constitution and ensure a smooth transition.
