UK Welfare Cuts Projected to Push 250,000 into Poverty by 2030

Britain's announced welfare cuts are projected to push 250,000 people into relative poverty by the end of the decade, according to government estimates released on March 26. The cuts, totaling 4.8 billion pounds ($6.19 billion) over five years, will affect support for individuals with illnesses and disabilities. The government estimates that 50,000 of those pushed into poverty will be children. By 2029-30, an estimated 800,000 people will no longer receive the "daily living" component of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), a benefit currently supporting 3.6 million individuals with health issues and disabilities. The government anticipates that 3.2 million families receiving disability benefits will experience an average loss of 1,720 pounds ($2,217) annually by the end of the decade.
