Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to stand trial on charges of attempting a coup d'etat after his failure to win re-election in 2022. The charges include allegedly attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law. Bolsonaro has denied the accusations, calling them unfounded. A five-judge panel unanimously decided to put Bolsonaro on trial. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the case, presented footage of Bolsonaro's supporters storming government buildings after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's inauguration in January 2023. Moraes stated that Bolsonaro systematically cast doubt on the electronic voting machines used in Brazil, undermining the election he lost.
