U.S. Teachers Unions and Rights Advocates Sue Trump Administration Over Education Department Dismantling

U.S. teachers unions and rights advocates, including the NAACP, initiated legal action against the Trump administration on March 24, challenging the attempted dismantling of the federal Education Department. This action follows President Trump's executive order aimed at shifting school policy control to states and local boards. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, asserts that the Trump Administration's intention to close the Education Department, as stated in a March 20, 2025, Executive Order, is unconstitutional and violates Congress's directives. The Education Department had no immediate comment. Earlier this month, a group of Democratic state attorneys general filed a similar lawsuit.
