Habeas Corpus Filed in El Salvador for Detained Venezuelans Deported by U.S.

A law firm presented a habeas corpus lawsuit to El Salvador's Supreme Court on Monday, March 24, in defense of 30 Venezuelan citizens. These individuals were deported to El Salvador by the United States and are currently held in the nation's "mega-prison." The lawsuit challenges the legality of their detention, following the U.S. deportation of approximately 238 Venezuelans accused of being members of the Tren de Aragua gang. Lawyers and family members dispute the gang affiliation claims. A U.S. judge has ruled that the detainees must have the opportunity to challenge the government's assertion that they are gang members. Concerns have also been raised regarding prison conditions, including reports of mistreatment and inadequate resources.
