Israeli Government Approves Motion of Censure Against Attorney General Amidst Protests

On March 23, 2025, the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, unanimously approved a motion of censure against Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. This action marks the initial step in a process that could lead to her dismissal. Justice Minister Yariv Levin had previously accused Baharav-Miara of politicizing her office and obstructing the government. The motion was approved during a cabinet meeting, amidst ongoing street protests. According to Israeli law, a five-member committee must vote in favor of her dismissal before formal proceedings can commence. Netanyahu was absent from the vote due to a conflict of interest, as he is currently under investigation. Baharav-Miara also did not attend, but sent a letter to the ministers denouncing the vote. Simultaneously, tens of thousands of Israelis have been protesting in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv for the sixth consecutive day. The protests are fueled by concerns over Israeli hostages following renewed bombings in Gaza, outrage over measures to dismiss the director of the national intelligence agency, and the potential dismissal of Baharav-Miara. Protesters and the opposition accuse Netanyahu's government of undermining key state institutions.
