Canada and EU Announce Retaliatory Tariffs Against US Steel and Aluminum Duties

Canada announced on March 12, 2025, that it will impose trade retaliations against the United States in response to the Trump administration's tariffs of 25% on steel and aluminum imports. The Canadian measures, valued at $20.7 billion USD, took effect on March 13, targeting steel imports, tools, computers, sports equipment, and iron stamping products. The European Commission stated on March 12 that it would impose tariffs on U.S. goods by April 1, following the U.S. imposing tariffs on EU steel and aluminum. The EU's retaliatory actions, valued at 26 billion euros, aim to protect European businesses, workers, and consumers. The measures will target steel, aluminum, textiles, leather goods, household appliances, plastics, wood, poultry, beef, seafood, nuts, eggs, sugar, and vegetables.
