Global EV Sales Surge, Led by China, Despite EU Tariffs Impacting Some Brands

Global electric vehicle sales, encompassing battery electric and plug-in hybrid models, experienced a 49% year-on-year increase in February, reaching 1.2 million units. Rho Motion attributes this surge partly to the timing of the Chinese New Year. China led EV purchases in February, marking a 76% yearly increase, and a 35% rise for the first two months of the year. However, EU tariffs imposed in late October on China-made EVs have affected some brands. In Europe, sales rose by 19% compared to the previous year, marking the second consecutive month of double-digit growth since new EU CO2 emission targets were implemented. Germany saw a 40% increase in the first two months of 2025. North America's EV sales grew by 17% year-on-year. Mexico's EV market more than doubled due to increased Chinese EV imports.
